It’s hard to believe that we are already well into the 2016 calendar year. If one of your resolutions for this year is to do something with your yard or to plant a garden for the first time, or maybe you just want to try something new you are going to enjoy this article. Based on a number of popular experts and locals this article will share with you some of our favorite 2016 yard and garden trends.
If you have ever traveled to Europe you may notice that many of the fences there aren’t the typical white, brown and grey that we see here. Europeans like to add a bit of color into their yards and gardens by painting fences, birdhouses or benches in bright colors. This trend is starting to shape here in BC with many people repainting their stark white accents with brighter more vibrant colors.
Subtlety in Gardens
We may be appreciating the bright accent of our fences and bird houses but this year’s trend doesn’t necessarily mean that your plants, flowers and shrubs need to have bright colors as well. Likely because of the water shortage, a trend coming from California is gardens that have subtle color arrangements with long grass, and grasses that flower in late fall. Adding rock paths, fences and other details help to give these gardens more character.
Indoor Vegetable Gardens
It’s amazing how much fruit a single plant in a pot can yield. Whether it is just a single plant or a living wall a popular trend coming out of Toronto is starting to switch out the traditional house plant for plants that can bring food to the table. Allowing you to grow fresh vegetables inside your home during the cool winter months and quickly transition them outside once the warmer spring and summer months move in. This is one of our favorite ideas!
Rethink Your Outdoor Experience
Everything that you have inside you can have outside. Creating more livable outdoor spaces to cook, relax and entertain. Even tho we live in the rainy Fraser Valley you can easily create more livable outdoor spaces by building rock fireplaces, patios and cover gazebos to help with whatever Mother Nature hands you.
We are extremely glad to see that when designing and building people are also considering the environment and looking at building sustainably. When looking your garden space see if there is ways that you can add water harvesting features to help with the maintaining your garden and yard throughout the dry months.
If you are considering gardening or fixing up your yard this year we hope that some of these 2016 trends helped to inspire you. More importantly, rather than following trends focus on building a space that fits your lifestyle and interests.
